So, yesterday's Deadlands game was fun. If you don't know what Deadlands is I will quickly explain. Deadlands is a post-apocalyptic role playing game. There are various types of undead and other horrors running around, as well as the four horsemen (they have taken over everything east of the Mississippi). This campaign is set in Junkyard, one of the few standing cities after the apocalypse 13 years earlier. Our group of heroes include an ex-soldier (played by Adam), a fairly new arrival the doctor/prostitute who has a destiny, so she can't die (played by Ryan), and me the Junker (think techno-shaman). We also technically have a fourth player (Blake) a very old militia man with bad eyes and ears (think Willy Nelson). We had just been evacuated out of Junkyard due to it being over run with Mainliners, a nasty type of undead that have needles for fingers and as the name suggest are druggies (the drug is human blood). Every person who is kill by them rises as one of them. So you can see how this is a problem. As we are stand around after being evacuated we hear that the team sent in to evacuate the hospital have not returned and can not be reached. Us being heroes immediately decide to go in there and get them out. So I persuade the militia man in charge to give us a few vehicles and militia men to go in there. We go in and after fighting off a group of the mainliners on the second floor we find a room full of survivors, 23 injured and 6 doctors. The situation doesn't look good. Only about 7 of the injured can walk and as we are thinking of a plan of getting them out we hear a thunk from the adjoining room that sounded like a ceiling tile falling and then the sound of climbing. We quickly decide to go with Adam's plan and I weld the second door shut so we can't have these things coming at us from behind as we leave. Once about half of the injured are out in the hall a hand full of these guys (it was an actual handful of d6's) break through the ceiling into the hallway. As the fight goes on out there there is another crack and two handfuls of the mainliners fall through the ceiling and into the room with me, 4 militia men and the rest of the injured. They kill one militia man and then all but two are compelled to begin begin swarming the fallen and getting there high off of his blood. At that point they are easy to pick off, one shot to the head and they are gone. But as we are about to begin picking them off we hear a cackle from above and we see the big main mainliner, who is actually a fearmonger (nasty critter that can only be killed by one thing), grinning down at us from the ceiling. Everyone except for one militia man (Willie) fails their guts check and runs from the room. Willie then makes a truly awesome head shot (hooray for rolling a nat 20 for location). The bullet just falls off. The fearmonger runs into the hall, completely by-passing Willie and proceeds t0 kill two more of our NPC's. He gets in a fight with Adam and Adam shoots him with what turns out to be the only thing that can kill him, a gun given to the fearmonger (before he became a fearmonger) by his father and the bullets that came with said .45. We get down to 1 of the special bullets (we had used a couple before and he dodged one this combat) and Adam is able to pull off an amazing shot to the head which kills the fearmonger. Hooray! One short battle on the first floor and we have successfully evacuated the remainder of the hospital, with no casualties other than militia men. Once the infestation of mainliners is cleared out a couple of weeks later we and a few others who also showed heroics during that time were rewarded. Life in Junkyard continues as normal. And now with the money we were rewarded with we can probably buy a van now so I can make it into a super car (yes my character can do such things).
Next session: rollplay heavy, hopefully no combat *yay!*
